Arriving in Athens (day 1)

We're Going to Greece

It's becoming a tradition for me to do some world traveling in the winters. I tend to find free time from work and try to recruit friends and family to tag along on my hopeful adventures. This year (2025) would be the first year traveling with a companion. After having solo traveled quite a bit, I found that time exploring the world is better spent with a partner. I first asked my brother to go to Mexico City which was met with heavy push back due to "safety concerns". His concerns were reasonable but it was obvious that he wouldn't be able to commit anytime soon or with any percentage of confidence.

So I turned to my dad. I told him I'm not sure where we're going to go but let's go somewhere cool... He pondered for at least a week. In his defense, he doesn't have the luxury that I have, being unrestricted by PTO days, so I understand the thought required into the decision. But he did eventually say yes, and now the world was our oyster.

After some deliberation we landed on Greece. A moderate, mediterranean climate that would provide a pleasant atmosphere to explore the city and sites throughout the southern region of the country. It would also buy us a week of relief from the biting midwest cold. With excitement, equipped with 0 Greek language acumen, I itinerated an ambitious yet relaxing week and we were off to the other side of the pond.

Landing in Athens

After layovers and delays, and being awake for 30+ hours, we arrived through Chicago - Amsterdam into Athens. My window seat provided a beautiful view of the idyllic Athens cove enveloped by a mediterranean winter sunset. My frustration and exhaustion turned to a sliver of excitement for the week of adventures ahead.
